Agafay Desert or Marrakech: Which Day Pass Should You Choose?
It's the question we get asked most, usually the night before: "We can't decide between the desert and a pool in town, what do you recommend?" The honest answer is that they don't sell the same day. One sells a landscape, the other sells time. Once you see that, the choice almost makes itself.
On one side, the Agafay desert, 40 to 50 minutes from Marrakech: a plateau of stone and hills facing the Atlas Mountains, where a handful of camps have built pools in the middle of nowhere. On the other, the Palmeraie, 20 minutes from the center: gardens, palm trees, and hotels that open their pools for the day.
The two at a glance
| Agafay | Marrakech Palmeraie | |
|---|---|---|
| Drive from the medina | 40 to 50 min | 20 min |
| Atmosphere | Desert, Atlas views, wide open space | Gardens, quiet, hotel |
| Cheapest option | €30 (Oryx, pool only) | €25 (Palais Farah, pool only) |
| With lunch | €45 to €70 | €45 to €49 |
| Private transport | About €70 round trip by van | €10/person (Palais Farah), from €30 (Eden Lodge) |
| Realistic length | A full day | Half a day is enough |
| Heated pool | Le Bedouin | Eden Lodge (29°C) |
The real difference: the drive
Agafay isn't far, but it's far enough to plan your day for you. With 45 minutes on the road each way, a day in Agafay is a day in Agafay. You won't do the medina in the morning and the desert in the afternoon without rushing.
The Palmeraie, on the other hand, slots into a schedule. You can visit the Majorelle Garden in the morning, be by the water at 1pm, and head back for dinner in town. Palais Farah is open from 10am to 9pm: stay three hours or eleven, whatever suits you.
If your trip is three days or less, this matters more than anything else. Our 3-day itinerary shows where a pool day fits in.
What Agafay has that the city doesn't
The landscape. You don't go to Agafay for the pool, you go for what surrounds it. A horizon with no buildings, the snow-capped Atlas in winter, and a silence you won't find anywhere in Marrakech. One detail to avoid disappointment: Agafay is a stone desert, not sand dunes like the Sahara. It's more mineral, and it's beautiful.
The sunset. This is what the dinner packages are about. In the late afternoon the low light colors the hills, the sky turns orange, then dinner is served under the stars. La Bohème (€65 with dinner) and Sunset Agafay (€56) add an evening show: Gnawa music, fire breathers.
The camp feel. Camels, quad bikes nearby, a farm at La Bohème: the day is about more than the water.
The five Agafay addresses we book, with lunch: Le Bedouin (€45), La Bohème (€45), Sunset Agafay (€45), Oryx Agafay (€55, or €30 pool only), and Be Agafay (€70), the most photogenic.
What the Palmeraie has that Agafay doesn't
Flexibility. No need to block out a whole day or arrange a van. A taxi does the job, or Palais Farah's transfer at €10 per person from two passengers.
Shade and calm. The Palmeraie gardens keep a coolness the desert doesn't have at 2pm in August. For a true rest day with no plan, it's often the more relaxing choice.
Warm water in winter. The pool at Eden Lodge & Spa is heated to 29°C all year, with a 32°C jacuzzi. From November to March, it's one of only two pools in our catalog where you'll actually swim.
The real price, transport included
The listed price isn't enough to compare: in Agafay, the drive costs almost as much as an entry. For two adults, lunch package, private round-trip transport included:
- Palais Farah, pool only: 25 + 25 + 20 transfer = €70
- Palais Farah, with lunch: 45 + 45 + 20 = €110
- Eden Lodge, with lunch: 49 + 49 + 30 = €128 minimum
- Oryx Agafay, pool only: 30 + 30 + 70 = about €130
- Le Bedouin, with lunch: 45 + 45 + 70 = about €160
- Be Agafay, with lunch: 70 + 70 + 70 = about €210
For the same package, Agafay costs €50 to €100 more for two people, mostly because of transport. With four, the gap narrows, since the van costs the same up to seven seats. The Agafay transfer is priced based on your pickup point: we give you the exact price after your request.
Depending on the season
From May to October, both work. Agafay is more exposed to the midday sun: in July and August, the Palmeraie and its shaded gardens are more comfortable between 1pm and 4pm.
From November to March, the air is mild at midday but unheated water is cold. Only two addresses stay truly swimmable: Le Bedouin in Agafay and Eden Lodge in the Palmeraie. And for a dinner package in the desert, bring a real jacket: evenings get chilly.
Our advice, depending on your trip
First trip, as a couple or with friends. Agafay, no question. It's the image of Marrakech you'll take home. Le Bedouin for lunch for the best value, or La Bohème for dinner for the sunset and the show.
Short stay, or arrival and departure days. The Palmeraie. Palais Farah fits into an already busy day, or the hours before an evening flight.
Tight budget. Palais Farah, pool only, €25. If you're set on the desert, Oryx Agafay at €30 is the cheapest way to swim there, sharing the van with others.
With young children. Neither is the best answer: look at our family-friendly pools instead, with farms, animals and detailed kids' rates.
In winter. Eden Lodge to stay warm in town, Le Bedouin if you still want the desert.
